🌱 Rain Causes Chaos + Fred Meyers Music + Intel Mandate
Find out what's going on around town with your daily Portland Patch!

Saturday is here and Portland is oh so ready for it! I know I am. Let's get the weekend started right and I'll tell you all about today.
First, today's weather:
We may see a little sun today, oddly enough. But that won't last as rain will start later in the afternoon. The high temp will be 55, so it'll be a little chilly, but we're used to it.

Here are the top stories in Portland today:
- Just yesterday I was talking about how great the Big Pipe project was and how it helped clean up the Willamette River, but I guess there are always limits. And the rain that's been hitting us for the last few days has found that limit. The fierce downpour has led the Big Pipe system to reach capacity early Friday morning in containing combined stormwater and sewage, according to the Portland Bureau of Environmental Services. You may want to stay away from the river for a few days. (KATU)
- Anti-homeless sentiment has led to everything from boulder placement to playing children's song all night long, but one Fred Meyers store has taken things too far neighbors say. The Gateway Fred Meyers in NE Portland has been playing classical music at select store locations to discourage illegal and dangerous activity. Residents in the area, however, claim that it is so loud that there's no escape, even in their own homes. "It's the equivalent of torture. This is what they use in enhanced interrogation techniques," said a neighbor named Paul. He lives directly across the street from the grocery store. (KGW)
- The torrential rain that has been hitting the Portland area has been causing landslides, car accidents and power outages across the city. Yesterday, Portland General Electric reported 21 outages with 759 total customers affected. Meanwhile, Pacific Power is reporting 18 outages with 1,554 customers affected, with the bulk of outages near Otis and Albany. There is even a Flood Watch in effect until Friday night. Steep hillsides are also at risk of mudslides and debris flows through the next 24-48 hours, especially in burn zones. (KOIN)
- Intel, the largest private employer in Oregon, has finally announced its vaccine mandate for employees. Employees have been told that they have until Jan. 4th, 2022 to be fully vaccinated or to have received a religious or medical exemption. The mandate will apply to all Intel workers regardless of if they are working on site or at home. (Willamette Week)
- The rain has been causing problems for everyone in Portland, but for a couple of Oregon Department of Transportation workers, it's downright dangerous. ODOT says those workers were working on I-205 near Milwaukie, when a vehicle veered off the road and hit both of them. Oregon State Police are investigating and says it will be releasing more information soon. They say the district attorney is involved. (KPTV)
