School Shooting Stopped by Newberg Police

Police say juvenile had taken "substantial steps" to making plan a reality

A teenager is under arrest, charged with attempted assault charges in connection with what they say was a plan to "obtain weapons to harm students and faculty" at Newberg High School.

Police say the suspect, whose name is not being released due to his age, "took substantial steps to obtain a firearm as well as compiled a list of supplies to accomplish the plan."

The student was a student at the high school.

The plan, they believe, was to be carried out within 70 days.

Patch has learned that the plan had evolved beyond the talk stage and that officials believe had their not been intervention, the student would have carried it out.

The investigation started on March 3 when the department was informed of the plan.

A spokesman for the department said that police and school officials "worked through the night to avert the threat and ensure that the high school was a safe place for students and staff."

Two juveniles were discovered to have probation violations and were taken into custody that night.

As a result of further investigation, one was charged in connection with the plot against the school.

Some 30 students, teachers, counselors, and others were interviewed during the investigation.

"This is a good reminder for students that if they see or hear of something that could affect the safety of others, make sure to report it," a spokesman for the Newberg-Dundee Police Department said in a release.
