Search Suspended for Portland Native Who Went Missing Near Siuslaw River

The 20-year-old man swam 40 yards from the shore and did not return, authorities said.

The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a 20-year-old swimmer and Portland native who went missing Friday night near the Siuslaw River, the agency said in a press release.

Crews searched more than 100 square miles for the man whose friends reported they lost sight of him after he went swimming at a beach party near the Siuslaw River entrance.

Dispatchers relayed a call from the man's friend to the coast guard around 8 p.m. saying he was reportedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he swam 40 yards from the shore and did not return.

According to the coast guard, the man reportedly removed his clothing before he went into the water, which was 54 degrees at the time. Media outlets, including Oregon Live, identified the man as Jack O'Hollaren, a Portland native and University of Oregon student.

"We extend our condolences to the man's family as the decision to suspend a search is never easy," Lt. Anna Steel, search and rescue mission coordinator for the case said in the release. "We also hope to prevent future tragedies by reminding the public that drinking impairs your judgement, sense of distance and direction. As the weather warms up, we urge beachgoers and boaters alike to stay sober and stay alive."
