Sewer Worker Believe Killed in Trench Collapse

Worker was digging a trench for a sewer line when it collapsed.

A worker is believed dead after a trench collapse in Southwest Portland.

It happened at 8122 SW 54th Avenue.

The worker, a 27-year-old man, was trapped when the trench he was working on collapsed.

The trench was 11 feet deep, three feet wide, and 70 feet long.

While part of the trench had shoring - temporary walls to hold back the earth - the worker was in an unprotected part of the trench.

Fire officials say given the amount of time he has been down there, they believe he may have died.

City records indicate a permit was issued Monday to replace to do sewer work at the house.

The man was part of a construction crew digging a trench for the sewer line for a home.

The are is expected to be closed for a few hours.
