Abby Wambach Apologizes After DUI Arrest in Portland

Abby Wambach is a two-time gold medalist and member of the World Cup winning national team.

PORTLAND, OR - Soccer Star Abby Wambach was arrested in Portland early Sunday morning for driving under the influence.

It happened around 2 a.m.. The 35-year-old Wambach was arrested by Portland Police and booked into Multnomah County Jail and released on her own recognizance.

Driving under the influence is a misdemeanor.

Portland Police say that a sergeant stopped Wambach's 2014 Range Rover at SW 14th and Yamhill after watching her run a red light the block before.

He did not realize it was the soccer star until after he stopped her.

Wambach failed a field sobriety test, according to police.

She "was polite and cooperative throughout the investigation," said Portland Police. Wambach later apologized for the arrest.

"I take full responsibility for my actions. This is all on me. I promise that I will do whatever it takes to ensure that my horrible mistake is never repeated," she wrote on her Facebook page.

Wambach was a member of the U.S. National Women's Team from 2003 until her retirement and currently holds the record for international goals for both male and female players with 184 goals.

She announced her retirement last October. her last game with the National Team was on December 16 in New Orleans.

On Monday, Wambach had been at Ohio State University for a talk with fellow star Megan Rapinoe.

Wambach announced at the time that she would donate her brain for concussion research, following in the footsteps of former teammate Brandi Chastian.

Wambach had also said that she is writing a book in which she will open up in ways that people don't know about and reveal details some will find shocking.
