Here are the top stories today in Portland:

  1. Supply chain delays are causing headaches for many Portland businesses. It's affecting not just items themselves, like olive oil, but also the items needed to package them, such as glass bottles for olive oil to be put in. Many businesses in Oregon are snarled in the global supply chain disruptions wrought by the pandemic — from toilet paper last spring to microchips today. These disruptions have hurt businesses small and large. Sportswear giant Nike, headquartered near Beaverton, recently cut its revenue forecast after a COVID-19 surge shuttered footwear factories in Vietnam. (OPB)
  2. In an unexpected bit of good news, Oregon saw another decline in the state’s unemployment rate in September. It now sits at 4.7%, according to the Oregon Employment Department. That’s down from 5%, as revised, in August, officials say. Employment department officials say the leisure and hospitality industry has regained 62% of jobs lost early in the pandemic. (KATU)
  3. So, now a bit of bad news for Multnomah County residents. Many will see their property taxes increase. County wide, taxes increased just over 8% from 2020, according to the Multnomah County division of assessment, recording and taxation. The county is mailing about 300,000 property tax statements and value notices to property owners. (KOIN)
  4. And then, there was more good news. OHSU projects we should reach herd immunity in Oregon by mid-December. Peter Graven, the director of the OHSU Office of Advanced Analytics said Oregon reached a form of herd immunity in June, but the Delta variant changed the math and required a higher threshold. He said we now need to reach 85 percent either through vaccination or infection. (KPTV)
  5. Climate change and wildfires have become a fact of life for Oregon winemakers. Can they shift to keep up with the environmental changes? Greg Jones, one of the country’s leading minds in the field, examines the intersection of viticulture and climatology. Jones was formerly the director of the Evenstad Center for Wine Education at Linfield University, and was instrumental in its launch. He was appointed CEO of his family’s winery Abacela in August 2021. (Portland Mercury)
