  1. It seems that Mayor Ted Wheeler has done a 180 about a potential Texas boycott in response to their restrictive abortion law. Instead, city officials are considering setting aside $200,000 that will go to organizations “that deliver programs and services related to reproductive healthcare.” (OPB)
  2. The new non-profit People for Portland has been making noise and letting Portland residents know about them, but with their often vague messaging, how much do we really know? Now, a PowerPoint presentation meant to be shown to prospective donors has leaked, shedding more light onto their tactics and plans for Portland. (Willamette Week)
  3. Just when you thought that catalytic converter thieves couldn't get any more brazen, they pull a heist like this. 20 catalytic converters were stolen from school buses parked in the Reynolds School District transportation lot. The district estimates that the theft caused about $70,000 in damage. (KPTV)
  4. The Nabisco strike in North Portland heats up, as picketers and security guards clash. Workers are outraged by a new contract that they say will reduce their wages, pension and overtime pay. The strike has been going on for over a month, attracting national attention and even support from the Portland Thorns who joined the protesters earlier this week. (KATU)
  5. More disturbing news from Newberg High School. The school has been in the news due to its decision to ban the display of Pride flags and Black Lives Matter signs, but recently parents have discovered students have been participating in an online "Slave Trade". In the social media chat group, students would joke about how much they would pay for their Black classmates. (KGW)

  • Portland Audubon: "Red-breasted Sapsuckers often have a tiny shadow in the form of hummingbirds who like to follow behind wherever it’s been and feed from the sap wells it creates. Rufous Hummingbirds have been known to nest nearby to make sure they get fi..." (Instagram)
  • It's finally happening! We're getting rain! Evidently enough rain that the National Weather Service has released a Special Weather Statement. And it's going to get cold, too, with some areas at risk for frost. What is this? It's still summer! It's all predicted to start Friday night, so bundle up and enjoy the rain. (KXL)
  • For those of you following the Portland artists that have been competing on the NBC show America's Got Talent, Jimmie Herrod is still knocking them dead. Herrod auditioned for the popular NBC competition show singing “Tomorrow” from Annie, which judge Simon Cowell dryly deemed the “worst song in the world.” But his voice was strong enough that he advanced nonetheless. His final performance was last night, but I'm very spoiler adverse, so I'll let you watch him on your own. Go root for a hometown hero! (Portland Monthly)
  • The Nicolas Cage movie Pig has received much acclaim from movie critics, which is great to hear, because the city of Portland is clearly one of the co-stars. Chase Hutchinson of the Portland Mercury has penned a substantial piece on how the movie was made and the careful consideration behind the most pivotal scenes. (Portland Mercury)
