Union Gospel Mission To Host Operation Overcoat Saturday, Sept. 30

Mission volunteers will provide free meals and clothing, as well as haircuts, dental screenings, and flu shots during the 4-hour event.

PORTLAND, OR — The Union Gospel Mission will host its 17th annual Operation Overcoat event in downtown Portland Saturday, Sept. 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

During the event, the Union Gospel Mission will block Northwest Third Avenue between West Burnside and Northwest Couch streets, and Northwest Couch Street between Northwest Third and Fourth avenues. Mission officials said they expect to serve more than 1,300 meals and deliver more 3,000 articles of clothing to folks in-need during the event.

Along with food and clothing, Mission volunteers will provide haircuts, flu shots, dental exams, and other health information at no cost. Visitors can also receive blankets, sleeping bags, and other hygiene items.

On Friday, the Portland Winterhawks hockey team helped the Union Gospel Mission sort items to be given away during Operation Overcoat.

"It is really exciting to have the Winterhawks here to help with this event," UGM Executive Director Bill Russell said in a statement. "We have seen a tremendous amount of support from the community for Operation Overcoat. Many people have donated items and we have great volunteers, like the Winterhawks, helping to make Operation Overcoat a success."

At last year's Operation Overcoat, offcials said, the Union Gospel Mission provided over 3,000 articles of clothing and 1,200 barbeque meals.
