Untested Rape Kits from Portland Finally Being Sent for Testing

Thousands of rape kits from Portland and other agencies will be sent to a lab in Utah.

The Portland Police Bureau Friday shipped off untested rape kits to a private lab in Utah.

Portland is one of several agencies in Multnomah County, Lane and Marion County sending approximately 2,800 untested rape kits to the lab.

It is part of an effort made possible by a grant from the office of the Manhattan District Attorney in New York.

Law enforcement agencies across the state have approximately 5,600 rape kits that have gone untested, some for years.

In return for accepting the grant, police agencies must have their unprocessed kits tested by September 2017.
