Volunteers Turn Out for Homeless Outreach Program
To help the homeless, they made sandwiches, bagged dog food, and assembled hygiene kits.
Dozens of volunteers showed up at Union Gospel Mission Saturday to help with the mission's new Search and Rescue outreach program. They made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, assembled hygiene kits, and bagged dog foods.
The volunteers, who made 250 sandwiches, are helping Union Gospel launch the new outreach program which gets underway Sunday.
Every Sunday through Thursday, from 7:00 .m. through 10:00 p.m., they will send a van to homeless people living on the street. The van will distribute peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, coffee, socks, pet food, hygiene items and other survival gear to not only meet basic needs.

The outreach workers will also try to establish relationships with people on the street in an effort to connect them with services.
The Mission is also seeking volunteers to serve in the Search + Rescue outreach van. Visit ugmportland.org or call 503-274-4483 for more information.
