That Was Quick: Steel Bridge's Lower Deck Closed Again

Less than 24 hours after being reopened after an electrical problem forced its closing for three days, another closure for the Steel Bridge.

That did not last long.

On Wednesday, the Steel Bridge's lower deck pedestrian and bike path was reopened after nearly three days of closure because of an electrical problem.

By the end of the day, it was once again closed.

This time the problem is damage to a specialized cable that controls the bridge gates.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation says that people biking or walking in the waterfront area today are advised to use one of the other Willamette River bridges downtown. Alternate routes include the Broadway, Burnside and Morrison bridges. The narrower sidewalk on the Steel Bridge's upper deck also remains accessible, though travelers should use caution and expect congestion on the upper deck sidewalks.
