The Wilson High School volleyball team is having a banner season in the Portland Interscholastic League. Entering this week’s matches, the Trojans have already clinched a share of the PIL title, their first since 2015, and can finish unbeaten in the league if they win their final two contests, at home against Jefferson on Tuesday, and at Benson on Thursday.
The season is a big step forward for Wilson, which finished second in the PIL behind Lincoln the last three seasons. The Trojans made an early statement on Sept. 5, when they won at Lincoln 25-20, 25-8, 27-29, 25-19 to end the Cardinals’ 40-match PIL winning streak. Wilson also won the rematch against Lincoln, 25-17, 25-23, 25-16, at home on Oct. 3.

Wilson is led by a fourth-year starter in senior Hannah Romeis, a 5-foot-5 outside hitter who was a first-team all-league pick last season, and senior Kennedy Stahr, a 5-8 outside hitter who leads the team in kills.
Other key players for Wilson include seniors Kaija Shreeve and Bryanna Weber, sophomore Avery Fraser, and junior Melia Patrick, who leads the attack as the setter. The Trojans are coached by Mark Mendak, who is in his third season at Wilson and was the PIL Coach of the Year last year.
Wilson was recently featured in a story on OSAAToday by Jerry Ulmer.
