1. Ochoco National Forest Prescribed Fire Notice (centraloregonfire.org) — Prescribed burning has begun in the Howard Elliott Johnson project area about 23 miles east of Prineville, and operations are expected to continue through October as conditions allow. Residents and visitors should expect visible smoke, temporary closures of dispersed campsites, and restricted access around active burn units while crews work to reduce wildfire fuel loads and improve forest health near Big Summit Prairie.
2. Crook County VFW Auxiliary presents multiple awards to local children (centraloregonian.com) — Local kids from Crook County were honored by the Prineville VFW Auxiliary at Abby's Pizza, where they received cash prizes and certificates for their patriotic artwork. Families celebrated together, and organizers are already inviting all Crook County students to enter the 2027 Illustrating American Art and Patriotic Art contests, with entries due Dec. 15.
3. Diving deep on Crook County election security (centraloregonian.com) — Crook County's clerk recently came to Prineville to walk residents through exactly how local ballots are handled and secured, stressing that tabulation equipment is offline and heavily tested. She invited anyone to observe the process, from livestreams of the election room to public certification tests and hand-count checks, aiming to reassure voters about election integrity.
4. Joan Walton Finley (centraloregonian.com) — Longtime Prineville resident Joan Walton Finley, remembered for her work at the Crook County Library and involvement with Christian Women's Club and Compassionate Friends, passed away in August. Her life included several moves but repeatedly returned to Prineville, where she supported local children's reading and community members coping with loss, leaving a wide circle of family and friends who will miss her deeply.
5. Recreational use advisory downgraded to a precaution for Prineville Reservoir (oregon.gov) — If you're heading to Prineville Reservoir, state health officials say cyanotoxin levels are now below recreational guidelines for people, but still high enough to threaten dogs. Visitors should keep pets away from any suspicious-looking blooms and watch for foamy, scummy, or paint-like water, since toxins can linger or move even when parts of the reservoir look clear.
