1. Salem Files Motion for Preliminary Injunction to Further Protect Drinking Water (kykn.com) — City officials in Salem have filed for a preliminary injunction in federal court to halt or limit the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' planned deep drawdown of Detroit Reservoir this fall. They argue the drawdown could send too much sediment into the North Santiam River, threatening the city's ability to treat drinking water for about 220,000 customers in Salem and nearby communities.
2. How the Oregon State Fair brings farming to life for Oregonians (rv-times.com) — The Oregon State Fair is returning to Salem Aug. 28–Sept. 7, bringing livestock exhibits, 4-H and FFA shows, new attractions and nightly entertainment to the fairgrounds on 17th Street NE. Salem-area families can explore hands-on agriculture education, enjoy concerts and carnival rides, and plan visits using the detailed hours, ticket prices, parking costs and biosecurity updates already in place.
3. Here are Salem-Keizer area girls soccer players to watch in 2026 (statesmanjournal.com) — High school girls soccer is gearing up across the Salem-Keizer area, with standout players from schools like South Salem, West Salem, McKay, McNary and North Salem expected to shape the 2026 season. The preview highlights returning all-conference talent, rising scorers and league champions, giving local fans a sense of which teams could contend for conference titles and deep playoff runs.
4. Oregon to Launch Explore Health this November (kykn.com) — Starting Nov. 1, Oregonians — including Salem residents — will shop for individual health insurance on a new state-run marketplace called Explore Health instead of HealthCare.gov. Announced from Salem after federal approval, the platform aims to better tailor financial assistance, customer service, and enrollment support to Oregon communities and invites public input as it's finalized.
5. Ex-Oregon congresswoman Chavez-DeRemer takes new job pushing data centers (centraloregondaily.com) — Salem's ongoing fight over proposed data centers gets new context as former Oregon congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer takes a job promoting the industry, even as city council meetings here draw fierce opposition. Her move comes amid statewide debates, gubernatorial support for moratoriums, and growing concerns about how large facilities could affect local communities like Salem.
