Today's riddle: Why should you never iron a 4-leaf colver? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Woman hit and killed by train in Salem (kgw.com) — A woman was struck and killed by a train Tuesday morning near 14th Street SE and Leslie Street SE, just south of the Salem Amtrak station, prompting nearby road closures. Salem police and fire crews responded around 8 a.m., and the victim later died at Salem Hospital. Investigators are still on scene, so expect closures on Hines Street and McGilchrist Avenue SE.
2. Traffic Alert: City Of Salem To Close Streets For One-Day Event (kykn.com) — Court Street NE between Capitol Street NE and Winter Street NE will be closed this Saturday, Oct. 3, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a one-day event at Oregon State Capitol State Park. Salem officials warn drivers to expect delays, follow temporary signs, and plan alternate routes while extra pedestrians are in the area.
3. Amtrak's new Airo trains launch Sept. 30 on the Cascades route (idahostatesman.com) — Starting Sept. 30, Salem riders on Amtrak Cascades will see brand-new Airo trains with more comfortable seating, better accessibility, 5G Wi‑Fi, and a revamped café. Two trainsets will begin running four daily trips between Eugene and Vancouver, B.C., stopping in Salem, with more trains arriving in 2027 to fully replace the aging fleet and potentially attract new local rail travelers.
4. Best private high schools in Oregon (ktvz.com) — Families in Salem can see how a local private high school stacks up in new statewide rankings of Oregon's top private schools from Niche. The list highlights enrollment, student-teacher ratios, and overall grades for schools across the state, helping parents compare options if they're considering private education for their teens.
5. This is what 'Success*' Looks Like: Hiding cost overruns (cityobservatory.org) — A Salem-area I-5 widening project between Kuebler and Delaney roads is being touted as a $55 million "under budget" success, but earlier public records show original estimates closer to $35 million. For Salem drivers and taxpayers, the analysis raises concerns about ODOT's cost reporting practices, how overruns are hidden, and what that might mean for future highway spending in the region.
