Center Street at 12th NE and Marion Street at 13th NE reopened around 12:15 p.m., and police are urging Salem residents to obey crossing signals and avoid walking along the tracks after three train-related incidents in a week.

Salem chef hospitalized after hit-and-run incident (statesmanjournal.com) โ A longtime night chef at Annette's Westgate Cafe in Salem is recovering from serious injuries after a midโSeptember hitโandโrun, and friends are rallying to help with his medical and living costs. Salem Police are still searching for a dark 1990s Honda Accord that fled toward downtown, while the restaurant and family organize fundraisers and a GoFundMe to support his lengthy rehabilitation.

3. Battle over drinking water, fish protections and Detroit Lake reaches federal court (opb.org) โ Salem officials are in federal court fighting a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plan to deeply lower Detroit Lake this fall, warning it could stir up sediment that threatens local drinking water systems. Environmental groups and the Corps argue the drawdown is needed to protect threatened Chinook salmon, and a judge plans to decide by late October whether the plan can proceed.
