📰 News we're reading

1. Springfield 'Stop the Corruption Town Hall Meeting' (senate.gov) — Sen. Jeff Merkley is holding a "Stop the Corruption" town hall at the Bob Keefer Center in Springfield on Sept. 10, giving residents a chance to hear updates and share concerns. Doors may fill quickly, and his office encourages anyone needing disability accommodations to contact them by Sept. 7 so they can fully participate.

2. Care providers, others speak in support of proposed behavioral health hospital in Springfield (lookouteugene-springfield.com) — A proposed 96-bed Timber Springs Behavioral Health Hospital in Springfield, paired with a nearby crisis stabilization center, could significantly expand local mental health care, especially for adolescents who now must leave the area. At a Springfield Utility Board Annex hearing, 15 speakers backed the project, describing current emergency room crowding, long waits, and families struggling to find inpatient care.

3. Crime Stoppers of Oregon to dissolve after 43 years of fighting crime (registerguard.com) — With Crime Stoppers of Oregon shutting down Sept. 30, Springfield residents will need to report tips directly to local agencies instead of using the anonymous hotline. For Springfield, that means using the police department's non-emergency line, anonymous tip line, or email, alongside options from Lane County Sheriff's Office and Eugene Police for different jurisdictions.

4. County weighing tax breaks to spur rural investment (mckenzieriverreflectionsnewspaper.com) — Lane County is considering new tax-break zones, including an Enterprise Zone in Goshen that would replace benefits lost when Springfield redrew its own zone in 2021. For Springfield residents, the move could shift where future industrial investment and renewable-energy projects land, influencing jobs, infrastructure needs, and regional growth around nearby highways and rural communities.
