1. Campaign donations at issue as commissioners side with timber heir in land-use dispute (lookouteugene-springfield.com) — Lane County commissioners narrowly approved retroactive permits for buildings along the McKenzie River, just east of Springfield's urban growth boundary, after a donor and campaign contributions sparked tense debate. With Springfield's incoming mayor having just defeated one of the commissioners involved, the dispute raises fresh questions about land-use rules, floodway safety, and the influence of big money in local politics.
2. Donations equip Oregon State Police vehicles in Lane County with 39 AEDs (kval.com) — State police patrol vehicles based out of Springfield, Oakridge, and Florence are now equipped with 39 donated defibrillators, giving troopers faster tools to respond to cardiac emergencies around Springfield and the rest of Lane County. Officials say the AEDs, funded by local foundations, could be especially lifesaving in rural areas where troopers often arrive before ambulances.
3. Eugene man sentenced in string of nine business burglaries (kval.com) — A man tied to nine Eugene business burglaries, including local food trucks and restaurants, was finally arrested while in Springfield after skipping a 2025 court date. He has now pleaded guilty to five burglary counts and received 36 months of supervised probation, with conditions that include participation in adult treatment court.
4. BLM appeals a judge's order to halt logging project over old-growth protections (lookouteugene-springfield.com) — A major logging project southwest of Eugene is back in court as the Bureau of Land Management and timber groups, including Springfield-based Rosboro, appeal a judge's decision to halt the Blue and Gold harvest plan. The outcome could shape how much old-growth is cut, how Lane County budgets are funded, and how much deference federal courts give BLM's forest decisions.
