1 Teen Dead, 4 Seriously Injured In Montco Crash

"This is every parent's worst nightmare," the DA said, as an investigation into the incident began.

CHELTENHAM, PA — One teen is dead and four people seriously injured after a crash in Cheltenham Township in the early morning hours Sunday, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office said Monday.

Nicholas Bedarek, 19, of Abington, was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital. An investigation into the crash, which involved a single car containing teens between the ages of 17 and 19, is underway.

“This is every parent’s worst nightmare," DA Kevin Steele said. "And our hearts go out to Nicholas’s family and the other families. We pray for a full recovery of all of the young people."

The incident occurred at around 1:34 a.m. Sunday on Greenwood Avenue.

A 2006 Honda, driven by one of the 18-year-olds injured in the crash, crossed a bridge heading into a curve, swiped a guardrail, and then crashed into two side-by-side utility poles, investigators said.

It's not yet clear what caused the crash.

Officers on the scene said they found open containers of alcohol in the car.

"These crash investigations, especially one involving a death, take time, and we are in the early stages of the investigation," Steele said.

All five individuals int he vehicle were taken to nearby hospitals. One was flown to Penn-Presbyterian. Bednarek was taken to Abington Memorial before being pronounced dead.
