$922K Coming For Abington Park Improvements

ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — A popular township park is getting a $922,822 state grant to make improvements.

State Rep. Ben Sanchez secured the funding to support infrastructure improvements at Baederwood Park, including construction of a footpath and restoration of a riparian buffer damaged in 2021 by Hurricane Ida.

The funding, awarded through the Commonwealth’s Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery program, will help Abington Township continue its long-term recovery from the devastating storm and strengthen the park and surrounding area against future severe weather.

“This project is about more than repairing damage — it’s about making sure Abington is better prepared for the next major storm,” Sanchez said. “Restoring the riparian buffer will help protect the park and surrounding area, while the new footpath will make Baederwood Park more accessible and enjoyable for residents. These are the kinds of investments that make our communities safer, stronger and more sustainable for years to come.”

The grant is part of more than $1.2 million in CDBG-DR funding announced by the Shapiro Administration for two projects in Montgomery County.

The grants support long-term recovery efforts in federally designated disaster areas impacted by Hurricane Ida. "Abington is very proud to be able to continue its commitment to preserving and maintaining natural recreation space,” Township Manager Chris Christman said. “Not only will this project support a sustainable park at Baederwood, but it will also further mitigate the storm water implications from another significant rain event like Hurricane Ida from adversely impacting our residents and infrastructure."
