Pics: Abington Art Center's Juried Show

Local artists show their stuff; the show runs through Jan. 29.

The Art Center kicked off its annual juried show Saturday.

This year’s juror was Lee Stoetzel; he is the co-curator and director of the West Collection, a corporate collection housed at SEI Investments in Oaks, Pa. Stoetzel is also an artist who has shown his work at the art center.

“Every year is different depending on who the juror is. We pick someone from outside the community so there’s no bias,” Laura Burnham, Abington Art Center Executive Director, said with a laugh. “I love shows that have a very specific point of view, and this one does; it’s very eclectic and beautifully hung together and we’re very excited about it.”

There are 43 pieces in the show, representing 37 artists. Burnham said a few people got two pieces in “which is very hard to do.”

More than 180 artists entered.

“To get in is a very big honor,” she said.

Natalie Brown, of Pittsburgh, took the biggest honor — the Chairman’s Award for Best of Show. Brown is a recent Tyler School of Art graduate.

Her piece, “Egyptian Revolution,” garnered a lot of stares at the show and is part of a body of work based on recent global events.

“I’m interested in the Arab Spring and how the Egyptian Revolution came about,” Brown said. “It started in Tunis, and I followed the track of how all the countries got involved.”

The wood piece took six months to make.

The show runs through Jan. 29.
