Abington-Based Alzheimer's Initiative, Featured on 60 Minutes, Recruiting Volunteers
An Abington-based study searching for a cure for Alzheimer's was recently featured on 60 Minutes. Now they need the help of volunteers.

ABINGTON, PA -- An Abington-based program working to find a cure for Alzheimer's has been featured on 60 minutes, and now that same organization is looking for participants in a research study.
The Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative (API) works across the country, including in Abington, to recruit participants in the research study. Locally, research is done at Abington Neurological Associates. David C. Wiesman, MD, is the lead researcher on the project.
The API Generation Study is seeking to recruit participants between the ages of 60-75, who have no memory or thinking problems, but who are likely to develop the more common form of late-onset Alzheimer’s based on genetic risk, the organization said.

According to researchers, the study will be the first to incorporate genetic testing and counseling into the screening process.
The API Generation Study serves as a complement to the research being conducted in Colombia that was highlighted on 60 Minutes on Sunday. The study is being conducted among a large Colombian family that has a rare genetic mutation which makes them certain to develop Alzheimer’s by their mid-forties, according to API.
