ABINGTON, PA — An elementary school student in the Abington School District has received a national honor for achievement while overcoming hardship.
Copper Beach Elementary student Natalie Shyanne Snipes was one of just 15 students around the nation to receive the 180 Student Award, given to students who show remarkable progress in turning around their academic achievement.
“Natalie’s newfound confidence and love of reading have made her a leader in the classroom,” her sixth grade teacher, Mary Elizabeth Klepper, said. “She helps others, takes pride in her work, and is eager to continually improve.”

The 180 program, organized by the learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, is described as a"intervention program" that uses technology to make an individual student's learning and instruction more personal.
“With all the troubles I had before starting READ 180, I feel accomplished. I’m more energetic in reading," Natalie said.
