Abington Township Fire Department invites residents to October 10-14 Fire Prevention Open Houses
See the fire trucks and stations, watch firefighter skill demonstrations, and learn how to prevent fires at a fun, family friendly event!

Abington Township Fire Department’s five volunteer fire companies invite residents to see the fire trucks, watch firefighters display key skills, learn fire prevention tips and techniques, participate in hands-on activities, and enjoy snacks at their annual Fire Prevention Week open houses.
Each fire company will host an open house one night the week of Oct. 10 through Oct. 14.
“These events are a whole lot of fun – for kids, parents, and us firefighters, too,” said Abington Fire Company Assistant Chief Richard Jones.

Station tours will be given, fire trucks will be on display and firefighters will demonstrate some of the key skills they use to fight fires and make rescues. ATFD firefighters love what they do, and for anyone who has ever considered joining our fire department, the open houses are a fantastic time to talk to current volunteers. Prospective volunteers can also learn more or sign up at www.AbingtonFD.org.
While they are having fun, families will also be learning important fire prevention and safety tips. Kids learn the importance of staying low during a fire by crawling through a trailer filled with realistic but harmless smoke, for example, and everyone gets a chance to actually use a typical home fire extinguisher.

This year’s nation-wide theme is “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years.” The date of manufacture is printed on the back of every smoke alarm and any that are 10 years old or older should be replaced.
This message from the National Fire Protection Association is extremely important. According to a 2015 NFPA study, three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms (38%) or no working smoke alarms (21%).
“Smoke alarms are inexpensive, but the people they protect are priceless,” said McKinley Fire Company Chief Shawn Philipsen.
Every ATFD open house runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Here are the days, dates, and fire station locations:
