World Down Syndrome Day is Tuesday, and Abington area businesses and schools are participating in the day.

ABINGTON, PA -- The Abington YMCA and Cheltenham School District are among 50 school districts, organizations, and businesses across Montgomery County that will participate in World Down Syndrome Day on Tuesday.

Participants in the event will wear their most colorful socks in celebration of individuals with Down Syndrome on March 21, organizers said.

The event is put together by the Montgomery County Down Syndrome Interest Group (MCDSIG).

“This is our largest awareness event for Down syndrome to date. We hope it leads to more acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome in schools, the community and in the workplace,” said Michele Hoenig, MCDSIG board member, in a statement. “We’re so humbled by our community that is lifting up our families on this special day.”

The day is March 21 because individuals with Down Syndrome have three copies of their 21st chromosome.

Schools and businesses are encouraging students to "rock the socks" as they take the opportunity to educate the community about Down Syndrome.

MCDSIG families and friends will also be celebrating World Down Syndrome Day with a Dine Out for Down Syndrome at Outback Steakhouses in Montgomeryville, Conshohocken and Royersford.
