Wildlife Warning Issued In Abington Township

Abington's animal control officer is warning residents to stay away from approaching wildlife now that the weather is warming.

ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — With the weather warming, the township's animal control officer is warning residents to stay away from approaching wildlife.

Animal Control Officer Jerrold Czech said that residents are likely to encounter wildlife born this spring that are searching for food.

"This is an exciting time, and you are likely to encounter one of nature’s new additions in your backyard or while walking in one of the township parks," Czech said.

"They may appear to be abandoned or injured. You may feel the need to do the human or 'right thing' and rescue the animal," he said.

Czech said that interfering with wildlife is a serious issue and may do more harm than good. He said that residents should not interfere with newborn wildlife.

"Disturbing wildlife, especially newborns, can lead to imprinting and habituation, which decreases the animal’s chances of survival," he said. "Handling wildlife without proper precautions can also lead to risks of injury, disease exposure, or rabies transmission."

Anyone with questions or concerns should contact the Pennsylvania Game Commission or contact Animal Control Officer Jerrold W. Czech at 267-620-1412.
