ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — The Abington Township Police Department is recognizing the work of two police officers who helped capture a burglary suspect.
On March 21, police officers responded at 5:43 a.m. to a security alarm at CPC Energy at 3031 Mount Carmel Avenue.
An employee contacted police about seeing a man inside the store on security cameras attempting to pry open gaming machines, police said.
Police Officer Scott Dinsmore spotted the man, who fled out a rear door when seeing the police officer. The officer chased the man to the area of Chelsea Avenue and Chestnut Avenue, where he lost sight of the suspect.
Responding officers from Abington, Upper Dublin, and Springfield Police Departments established a perimeter. K9 units from Hatboro and Upper Moreland responded to assist, while Abington Police Officer Michael Guidera deployed the department drone in support of the search efforts.
Dinsmore assisted with the K9 track, which continued northbound through the rear yards of Chelsea Avenue, where the suspect was last seen.
Guidera maneuvered the drone ahead of the K9 team and conducted an aerial search of the area. At 6:09 a.m., He saw a heat signature in a rear yard on Chelsea Avenue.
After continued observation, he determined that the heat signature was a person crawling along a fence line. Guidera successfully directed the K9 team and perimeter officers to the location, resulting in the suspect being taken into custody without further incident.
"The actions displayed by Officer Dinsmore, Officer Guidera, and all assisting personnel demonstrated outstanding teamwork, initiative, and dedication," the police department said. "Their coordinated efforts led to the successful apprehension of a burglary suspect."
