Cheltenham School Board Addresses Safety

CHELTENHAM TOWNSHIP, PA — The Cheltenham Township School District is trying to start off with a clean slate for the 2026-2027 school year.

Following a year in which a hazing incident led to the cancellation of its remaining varsity football season last year and a decision not to have the program this year, the school district is imposing safety measures to better protect its students.

The schools superintendent also came under fire for criticism regarding safety in the district's schools.

In May, the school board issued a statement supporting Schools Superintendent Brian W. Scriven.

In early January, a report revealed that 19 students saw an assault but did nothing to stop it, with some even recording it.

Those hazing allegations prompted Scriven to cancel a high school football game and suspend the season late last year.

The upcoming varsity and junior varsity football season was also canceled due to a continuing investigation into the hazing incident.

That decision drew a mixed reaction from residents.

Now that the school year has ended, the school district is focused on its new measure called "Welcoming Schools Resolution & Safe Zones Policy."
