CHELTENHAM TOWNSHIP, PA — SEPTA had hoped that more communities would build apartment complexes with walkability access to a train station.
In Hatboro, two luxury apartment complexes have opened to entice commuters to Philadelphia to live in the suburbs.
That concept is now catching on in another eastern Montgomery County community.
SEPTA’s Jenkintown-Wyncote Regional Rail station will be getting some company in the near future.
Eighty-six new apartments are planned in the township's Wyncote section that would be located about 1,000 feet from the train station.
Like Hatboro's concept, plans call for commercial space in the buildings as well.
Meanwhile, SEPTA has plans to revamp the pedestrian overpass at the train station.
The project would convert a second existing structure into a 36-unit apartment building, and add a third, 50-unit apartment complex to the site with a parking garage and a retail space on the ground floor, according to a May review letter from the Montgomery County Planning Commission, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
