When a refrigerator dies on a Sunday morning, most shoppers hear the same answer: schedule it for next week. At H&R Scratch & Dent Appliances, that is not the model.
The family-owned retailer, with showrooms in Bensalem and Warrington, was founded in July 2025 on a straightforward premise: people should not have to spend thousands of dollars to get a quality, major-brand appliance. In a little more than a year, that idea has grown from a one-person operation into a two-location business built around discounted inventory, fast delivery, and service that does not stop at the sale.
The founder started H&R with a simple observation: shoppers were being asked to pay full retail for appliances they needed, while perfectly good brand-name units — new, overstock, or lightly cosmetically imperfect — sat at a fraction of that price.
In the beginning, the work was almost entirely hands-on. Sales, deliveries, inventory, customer service, and day-to-day operations all ran through one person. Those first months, the founder said, were an education in what customers actually wanted from an appliance store — and what they did not.
Since then, H&R has expanded into a family-owned business serving both communities. The company has built a team, broadened its inventory, and put customer service at the center of the brand. The goal, the founder said, has never been only to sell an appliance.
"We want customers to feel like they got a great deal, were treated honestly, and have someone to call if they need help," the founder said. "For us, H&R is about building something our family can be proud of and creating relationships with customers that last beyond one sale."
H&R now operates at 3580 Progress Drive in Bensalem and 366 Easton Road in Warrington, specializing in brand-new scratch-and-dent and overstock refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, ovens, and more.
Same-day and next-day delivery, professional installation, haul-away, and emergency replacements have become the company's strongest differentiators. One Sunday morning made that especially clear.
A customer called after their refrigerator stopped working. The freezer was no longer freezing. Ice had melted and was leaking through the dispenser. They had a freezer full of food and needed a replacement immediately.
Staff member Mo helped them find a unit that fit both their needs and their budget. That same afternoon, H&R delivered and installed the new refrigerator and hauled away the old one.
The customer later left a review calling the team a lifesaver, saying they were able to save most of their food.
"That's the kind of situation that means a lot to me," the founder said. "When someone's refrigerator breaks on a Sunday, they don't want to hear, 'We'll get you scheduled next week.' They have a problem right now. Being able to solve that problem the same day is what we try to do at H&R."
Refrigerators remain one of the store's largest categories, especially French-door and larger family-size models. Washers, dryers, and ranges are also consistently popular. H&R is also seeing more interest in newer, smarter appliances designed to make everyday life more convenient.
The main draw, the founder said, is value. Brand-name appliances arrive at prices well below what shoppers typically see at major retailers. Much of the inventory is brand new scratch-and-dent or overstock, meaning a customer can often buy an essentially new machine with a cosmetic imperfection for hundreds of dollars less.
Reviews, the founder added, tell the rest of the story. Customers regularly mention prices, the delivery team, how quickly jobs get done, and how problems are handled when they come up.
"We're not trying to just be the place with the cheapest appliance," the founder said. "We want to be the place where customers feel like they got the best deal and were treated right."
