ELKINS PARK, PA — A 20-year-old man has pleaded guilty to a shooting during a carjacking in which the victim suffered significant injuries two years ago, federal authorities said.
Niyaz Burgess, 20, of Elkins Park, pleaded guilty on Thursday to carjacking and using, carrying, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, U.S. Attorney David Metcalf said.
In July 14, 2024, Burgess carjacked and shot a man on the 6600 block of Limekiln Pike, driving away in the victim's vehicle, authorities said.
The man suffered two gunshot wounds to the abdomen and one to the arm, resulting in significant internal injuries.
The next day, Pennsylvania State Troopers found the victim's crashed and abandoned car on Interstate 95 South in Tinicum Township.
They confiscated the vehicle and found Burgess's fingerprints and palm print on the stolen vehicle, authorities said.
Burgess is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 15.
He faces a maximum possible term of life imprisonment, five years of supervised release, and a fine of $500,000, with a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison.
