Celebrating the 36th Anniversary of Cantor Don Samuels at Congregations of Shaare Shamayim on Nov. 20, 2016
Present and former congregational families and community members are invited to honor Cantor Samuels at an anniversary brunch.

Philadelphia, PA—Cantor Don Samuels is beloved by the members of Congregations of Shaare Shamayim, a Conservative synagogue which has served Jews in and around the Northeast Philadelphia region since 1962. A gifted Cantor, his liturgical music has provided comfort, inspiration and understanding to thousands of people, enriching their spiritual experience throughout the year.
To honor his 36 years of clergy service, Shaare Shamayim invites its members, former families with fond memories, and the community to celebrate Cantor Samuels with a brunch and lighthearted “roast” filled with poetry and song on Sunday, November 20, 2017 at 10:30 am. Appropriately, an event fee of $36 per person includes a delicious brunch catered by Barclay, including bagels and lox, French toast, blintzes and desserts. Since joining the clergy of Shaare Shamayim in 1980, Cantor Samuels has been an ambassador of goodwill, leading daily and shiva minyans and making hospital calls. In weekly services, at holidays, and in times of joy and sadness, his beautiful voice and personal compassion have been an uplifting fixture of congregational life. Present Congregational members appreciate his dedication, guidance, and participation in their lifecycle events, and former families remember Cantor Samuels as a kind and caring person who made a difference in their lives.

Don Samuels was born and raised in Canada. After earning a degree in English Literature at the University of Toronto, he pursued a career in choral conducting and teaching music, sharing his love of Shakespeare and theater with his students. In 1974, seeking a new path, he enrolled in the Cantorial Training Institute and James Strait School of General Jewish Studies at Yeshiva University. At Shaare Shamayim, he enjoys sharing his passion for Jewish music and inspiring all ages. He and his wife, Sylvia, have two children and 13 grandchildren.
