Cheltenham Twp. School Closed For Boiler Leak

Elkins Park School needs boiler repairs after a leak flooded the building this week, school officials said.

CHELTENHAM TOWNSHIP, PA —Elkins Park School will be closed Thursday and Friday due to a boiler leak, school officials said.

In an email to the school community, Cheltenham Schools Superintendent Brian W. Scriven said that a pipe leading from the boiler —which carries steam to the radiant heaters —has a large hole, releasing steam into various parts of the building.

The schools superintendent said that the steam leaked into ceilings, a stairwell, and certain portions of the second-floor hallway and main lobby.

Scriven said a contractor has been working for the past two days with the school district's facilities team to come up with a resolution and fix the leak.

In order to address the leak, the boiler needs to be shut down, meaning there will be no heat in the building, the superintendent said.

"That will create an untenable situation for our students and staff," Scriven said.

He said that asynchronous instruction will be available, but is not required, through IXL.

While Scriven said he expects the school to reopen Monday, an updated communication will be sent out by 5 p.m. Sunday if the situation changes.
