Design Details Discussed On New Abington Middle School

Abington and Rockledge residents approved a special referendum to build a new $285 million middle school

ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — The Abington School Board this week received a status update from consultants on its new middle school project.

At Tuesday night's Abington School Board meeting, consultants with ICS presented a status update on the design phase of the Abington Middle School Project, including buildable versus non-buildable zones, conceptual site plans, potential traffic flow, the building footprint, and organizational zones, such as community and academic spaces.

The presentation also highlighted next steps, including a traffic study that is currently underway, as well as meetings with various township officials and committees in the coming months.

The project continues to be on schedule and within budget, school officials said.

Community engagement was also highlighted in the presentation, including a recent meeting with neighbors whose properties immediately border the Middle School property, as well as ongoing discussions with Middle School personnel to ensure designs align with student and staff needs.

The orientation also touched upon results of the most recent online survey in which the district requested input on the community's design priorities.

The online survey results found:

  • Nearly 1,800 respondents provided input, more than any other survey related to the Middle School Project to date.
  • This feedback helped confirm or redirect the project team's alignment in creating a building design that is the best fit for the community.

Both the orientation presentation and video, as well as the full survey results, will be available on the Resources page of OneASDOneFuture.org.

Residents in Abington Township and the Borough of Rockledge approved plans for a new $285 million middle school by a little more than 550 votes.

With nearly 17,000 votes cast in Abington Township and Rockledge Borough, the new middle school was approved in a special referendum during last May's primary election. The project received 8,676 yes votes to 8,129 no votes.
