Fundraising Gala Marks 40 Years of Fighting the Stigma of Addiction

"Thriving in Recovery" campaign highlights those living fulfilling lives in long-term recovery.

The Council of Southeast Pennsylvania, celebrating its 40th anniversary, hosted the “Thriving in Recovery” gala Thursday, May 5, at Normandy Farm in Blue Bell, Pa. More than 90 people committed to stand against the stigma of addiction and fight for recovery by recreating a photo from Operation Understanding that took place 40 years ago, when celebrities and prominent public figures announced they were recovered alcoholics to help reduce the stigma associated with the disease. William Borchert, an Emmy-nominated screenwriter and author, participated in both photos and received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the gala for proactively fighting the stigma associated with addiction and for providing education, hope, and inspiration to millions to sustain long-term recovery and thrive. Borchert has been in recovery for 53 years. The year-long “Thriving in Recovery” campaign aims to remove barriers that prevent an individual’s ability to access and sustain long-term recovery, while also increasing understanding and proactively addressing stigma and discriminatory practices related to addiction.
