Glenside Gearing Up For 4th of July Festivities

The Greater Glenside Patriotic Association is holding a 5K fundraiser in April to support the 4th of July parade and fireworks show.

GLENSIDE, PA — While summer can't get here fast enough for most of us with recent snowstorms and a major one expected this weekend, Colleen McDevitt has thoughts of a time later this year when warm temperatures will be a cause for celebration in town.

McDevitt, a volunteer with the Greater Glenside Patriotic Association, is the new race director for the Keep the Parade Running 5K fundraiser. See the flyer below for more information

McDevitt has run in the race before. Now she is just overseeing it.

"It's a major fundraiser for us," she told Patch this week. "It's a big year with the 250th anniversary."

Since 1904, Glenside has celebrated Independence Day with a full day of community fun — including our beloved parade and fireworks.

"I don't think a lot of people are aware that the parade and fireworks are funded completely by the community," McDevitt said.

McDevitt hopes to raise $18,000 this year. She added that the cost of fireworks is also a little more expensive.

She hopes turnout for the race will be between 300-350 people. McDevitt is also hoping that each runner can raise $50 on their own as well. "We're not asking them to break the bank," she said.

People can sign up for the race through the flyer below. McDevitt said that people can run and walk in the race.

McDevitt is seeking to award the race finishers in every age group.

"Who doesn't want to win a medal?" McDevitt said.
