ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — Jefferson Abington Hospital's emergency trauma center will be expanded and modernized, allowing another 20,000 patients to be treated annually, officials said on Tuesday.

One of only two Level II trauma centers in Montgomery County, the Goodman Emergency Trauma Center serves as the hospital’s “front door,” caring for more than 80,000 patients annually.

The hospital’s trauma capacity will grow by 25 percent, increasing the trauma center's capacity from over 80,000 to 100,000 patients, officials said.

The project will reallocate 10,000 additional square feet to expand treatment capacity from 80 to 116 spaces, while reconfiguring more than 24,000 square feet of existing clinical space, officials said.

The expansion builds on Jefferson Abington Hospital’s recent efforts to shorten waits, improve care flow, and make every patient’s experience faster, calmer, and more supportive from the time they arrive to the emergency room.

The redesigned trauma center will also feature calming aesthetics, state-of-the-art triage and treatment areas, modern patient amenities, and spaces for emergency medicine, officials said.

Nearly 75 percent of all patients treated at the hospital first enter through the emergency department,

Hospital officials said the expansion comes from a gift from longtime philanthropists Bruce and Judi Goodman to name the center the Goodman Emergency Trauma Center at Jefferson Abington Hospital.

“The Goodman Emergency Trauma Center will allow us to deliver faster, more personalized, and more compassionate care," said Joseph G. Cacchione, MD, CEO of Jefferson.

Bruce Goodman, a commercial real estate developer, is a longtime member of Abington’s Board of Trustees. The lifelong Montgomery County resident said his family has relied on the hospital for four generations.

“Abington has been there for our family’s most critical moments,” Goodman said. “We are honored to help ensure that every family in our community has access to exceptional care in a space that fosters healing.”

In 2025, Jefferson announced a multi-year improvement project with plans to upgrade and expand the emergency department at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital, officials said.
