Love in Action: Feeding Students Working to Better Themselves
Anthony Scalfaro and Bob Jasionowski helping Manor College Students' Food Pantry

So much is broadcast about what divides us as citizens, but not enough is written about what we agree on with our neighbors. On Election Day, the Republican committee people in Abington Township, Ward 3, which is the SouthEastern most corner of the Township, decided to do something about hunger right in their own backyard.
The six GOP committee people in Abington Township, Ward 3 learned that Manor College was in need of non-perishable food. The College learned that one their students was living in their car and oftentimes, went hungry. The Dean of Students sent a survey out to their students, where 40 of 50 student respondents admitted to going hungry during their studies. Now this is different than being hungry during class and waiting for your next break to eat--"going hungry" meaning, they simply did not have any food to eat and no means to feed themselves. Manor College converted a large closet into their food pantry, where students could grab items to make quick meals or snacks to eat between classes.
Running low on resources, Manor College initiated a food drive to re-stock the popular food pantry. This is where the Ward 3 GOP committee people set-up a sign at their two Election Day polling places to solicit donations. With little notice, the response was overwhelming. The group collected about 8 bags of nonperishable groceries and also learned the students are also in need of toiletries such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, razors, shampoo, mouthwash, and floss.
