Man Stabbed Ex-Girlfriend To Death At SEPTA Lot: Montco DA

Gilbert Newton III, 18, stabbed Abington resident Morgan McCaffery more than 30 times, killing her Monday, authorities said.

ABINGTON, PA — A man has been charged with the stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend at a Montgomery County SEPTA station early Monday morning.

Authorities said Gilbert Newton III, 18, of Philadelphia, stabbed and slashed Abington resident Morgan McCaffery, 18, more than 30 times, killing her Monday.

Police had previously confirmed they found the body of a teenager at the station Monday, but the circumstances surrounding the incident had been unclear at that time.

McCaffery had recently broken off a year-long relationship with Newton, the District Attorney's Office said, and agreed to meet Newton at the Meadowbrook SEPTA station at some point Monday morning.

Police were called to the scene around 8:15 a.m., where they found McCaffery lying in the parking lot next to her running car and covered in blood, the DA's Office said. She was declared dead at the scene.

Newton was arrested at his Philadelphia home, still wearing bloody clothing, at around 10 a.m.

Newton was booked at Montgomery County Correctional Facility on first and third degree murder charges. No bail is available for those charges.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 4.
