Metropolitan Ballet Academy offers Master Classes to the public

Classes available in pilates, music appreciation, hip hop, and dance history.

Jenkintown, PA—Metropolitan Ballet Academy (MBA), located at 700 Cedar Road in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, announces that registration is now open for its 2017 Winter Workshop. This year, classes held on Saturdays from February 25 through April 29 will offer a unique opportunity for students, dancers and the public to broaden their knowledge of the performance experience with classes in self-treatment techniques to reduce chronic pain, music appreciation, dance history, and hip hop. MBA founder and Artistic Director Lisa Collins Vidnovic says, “Our student dancers engage in a rigorous curriculum of classical dance training for nine to twelve months each year. The Winter Workshop gives them, and the general public, a chance to learn about other aspects of dance and performance art in one-to-three session classes that may inspire them to learn more. We are delighted to offer these exciting classes, taught by expert faculty, and encourage anyone with an interest in these topics to spend some Saturdays in our Winter Workshops.”

MELT: June Hines, Pilates Instructor

The MELT Method is the very first Hands-off Bodywork® method developed for the general public as a self-care tool to prevent and relieve chronic pain. Adding MELT to your life will help improve your efficiency and performance in your exercise routine, while enhancing daily life by improving your digestion, sleeping, and reducing stress. Music Appreciation: Anna Meyer, Flutist

Can you tell the difference between an 18th century minuet and a twentieth century tone poem? What are the distinguishing markers in classical music that help us to understand where the music came from in history? What's the difference anyway between Mozart and Ravel? Anna Meyer, flutist, will guide you through the different periods of music history and help you to acquire the tools necessary to place some of the music you hear all the time in the dance studio.

Hip Hop Dance: Tyger-B, Performer/Choreographer/Instructor

Learn the fundamental techniques of hip hop dance in this powerful, energetic class which focuses on musicality and rhythm as well as learning choreography and developing self-expression. Students will immerse themselves in various hip hop styles such as locking, popping, krumping and dancehall with an emphasis on footwork and body isolations.

3-class workshop: Saturdays, March 4, 11, & 18

Dance History: Illustrated Lectures with Kate Carr, Dance Educator

Dancer, educator, teaching artist and certified yoga instructor, Kate Carr received her B.F.A. in Dance Performance from the University of the Arts in 2002. In two fascinating lectures, learn about the history of dance through the ages.

MELT

June Hines, graduate of The University of Oklahoma with a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Dance, taught dance at Mercyhurst College, now Mercyhurst University and then Allentown College now DeSales University for a total of eleven years as an Associate Professor of Dance. June was certified in 1996 by Romana Kyrzanowska to teach the Pilates Method of Body Conditioning. Working with dancers and physical therapy patients, she directed The Pilates Studio at The Pennsylvania Ballet for seven years. June was also a faculty member of the Abington Arts Center from 1998-2013 teaching Pilates. From 2010-2011, June taught Pilates at the Metropolitan Ballet Academy and from 2011-2016 taught at the School of the PA Ballet. In 1997 June Hines Pilates opened in Rydal, in 2006 the Doylestown location was opened and the newest location in Jenkintown was opened in 2016. June is a Level 3 teacher trainer for Romana’s Pilates and teaches within her

studios with her team of Romana’s Pilates teachers. In 2015 June began training with Sue Hitzmann the creator of the MELT Method. After completing 3 seminars in New York with Sue Hitzmann, June is now a Level 2 Melt instructor and is offering workshops within her Pilates studios as well as guest teaching at various studios in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

MUSIC APPRECIATION

Anna Meyer holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a Master’s from The Peabody Institute, and just began coursework on her DMA at Temple University this fall. She was previously the adjunct instructor of Flute at Mercyhurst University and Second Flutist of the Canton Symphony. She took second place in the 2015 Myrna Brown Competition, and is currently a listed substitute for many regional orchestras, including the Delaware Symphony, Opera Philadelphia, and the Allentown Symphony. Anna and her husband, Erik, often collaborate in concerts of flute and organ music, and she is a founding member of the Lyra Ensemble.

HIP HOP

Tyger-B, a 'jack of all trades', an individual dedicated to his careers, and an inspiration to those who have witnessed a show, battle, piece of choreography, training session, painting, poetry from his book, or thoughts/words on a panel from this positive individual. Tyger-B has taken the years granted to him and treated them with countless hours of focus, sweat, determination, and with a positive perspective. Taking his abilities around the globe, Tyger-B has spread his gifts throughout the USA, Russia, Canada, South Africa, Paris, Japan, Uzbekistan, China, London, and many other locations. Moving in the styles of hip hop, house, dancehall, salsa, and many more as a representative of the USA. Studying the techniques of ballet, modern, jazz, tap, and more at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Training in the movements of muay thai, kick boxing, taekwondo, capoeira, and other martial arts for over two decades. All of these attributes contribute to his creative choreography, his diverse ability to switch genres, and his quick eye. With these many things under his belt, Tyger-B has used his choreography and dancing abilities to set works on Pennsylvania Ballet ll, many recognizable festivals throughout the world, over a decade in the commercial industry with several artist like R&B singer Ginuwune, Pop artist Raven Symone, MTV's Mena Heaven, and many other companies, showcases, competitions and vocalist. Throughout his many events and memorable captures, it's always a factor for Tyger-B to continuously evolve, share his positivity, and leave a piece of his heart with everyone possible, no matter the size. Giving thanks to all those who have believed in him, every teacher and every student, Tyger-B looks forward to continuing his life to become the best human he could possibly be right in front of your eyes.

DANCE HISTORY

Kate Carr is a dance educator, teacher and performer based in Glenside, Pennsylvania. Since 2011 she has served as a teaching artist at BalletX, and since 2013 has taught creative movement, modern dance, yoga for dancers and dance history at Metropolitan Ballet Academy. From 2006 to 2011 she was a performing artist with White Box Theatre Research Collective. Ms. Carr earned her BFA in Dance Performance from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2002, and in 2005 earned her 250 hour certification in vinyasa yoga, as well as certification in yoga for children and teens. Her significant experience as a yoga instructor for children, teens and adults includes five years teaching multi-level vinyasa classes to employees of the Pew Charitable Trust.

Registration now open for Metropolitan’s 2017 Summer Intensive

Metropolitan Ballet Academy, recognized by POINTE magazine (October 2011) as one of the top seven studios in America “cultivating top talent,” continues to provide its acclaimed dance training throughout the summer months. Intermediate and advanced student dancers annually look forward to The Bridge, MBA’s Master Class workshop series, featuring a distinguished roster of guest artists from June 7-14, 2017.

Guest artists from the U.S. and abroad also teach regularly in MBA’s renowned Summer Intensive, which will be held at the MBA studio from July 10 to August 11, 2017. In addition to half and full-day dance programs for beginner, intermediate and advanced boys and girls (ages 3-18), the MBA Summer Intensive also offers M3 = Math x Music x Movement©: an exciting summer enrichment program for ages 7-10, featured in Dance Teacher magazine (April 2015).
