Montco Senior To Compete For $10k In National Math Competition

Harry Xi was the top scorer in a nationwide math contest last summer. Let's go Harry!

AMBLER, PA - Harry Xi, a senior at Upper Dublin High School, is one of 10 students nationwide selected to compete for $10,000 in the 2016 national Who Wants to Be a Mathematician contest.

This past summer Xi was the top scorer nationwide in the American Regions Mathematics (AMS) League contest.

Xi was selected for the national Who Wants to Be a Mathematician based on his score on an online qualifying test with questions on algebra, trigonometry, probability, and math history, which was administered by high school math teachers nationwide.

The competition will take place on January 7, 2016 in Seattle at the Washington State Convention Center.

This is the seventh annual national Who Wants to Be a Mathematician contest.

The AMS has been doing regional contests at universities and science centers from Boston to Hawaii since 2001. In the contest’s history, nearly 700 students have won over $450,000 in cash and prizes and have been cheered on by over 20,000 classmates.

Who Wants to Be a Mathematician is part of the annual Joint Mathematics Meetings in Seattle, attended by more than 6,500 mathematicians. The top prize is $5,000 for the winner and $5,000 for the math department of the winner’s school.

Xi is an accomplished pianist and loves to compose music pieces, and is also interested in transforming math into visual art.

If you’re going: The event starts on January 7 at 9:30 a.m. Pacific time and runs until about 11 a.m. It will take pace in Room 6A of the Washington State Convention Center.
