Safe Harbor Celebrates 25 Years At Jefferson Abington Hospital

ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, PA — For 25 years, Jefferson Abington Hospital’s Safe Harbor program has helped children, teens, and caregivers grieve the loss of a parent, caregiver or sibling through support groups, art, music, and movement activities.

As its name suggests, Safe Harbor provides a safe space for families to share their experiences, feel supported, and heal.

The team is dedicated to the belief that no one should grieve alone, and being with others who are also grieving, can provide meaningful comfort.

The program’s large, family-friendly space in Willow Grove provides access to art, music, and playrooms along with a caregiver support room and resource library.

The walls are covered with a variety of artwork that children and teens have made over the years, creating a very welcoming environment.

In addition to support groups and creative activities, Safe Harbor offers a School Outreach Program with local schools to help counselors learn how to support grieving students.

Every June, Camp Charlie takes place on the grounds of the Temple Ambler campus giving children in the program an opportunity to enjoy outdoor fun and games.

As part of their 25th anniversary of healing, Safe Harbor families recently gathered to create memorial flags honoring the loved ones they lost.

The flags are prominently displayed at Safe Harbor as a reminder of what brings all of the families together.
