Senior Center Evacuated For Downed Power Line In Huntingdon Valley

HUNTINGDON VALLEY, PA —Senior center residents were evacuated Thursday after a tree brought down a primary electrical power line, fire officials said.

The Huntingdon Valley Fire Company responded at 4:38 a.m. Thursday for the start of multiple calls from a tree bringing down an electrical line near Welsh and Terwood streets, officials said.

The downed line caused a backfeed and loss of power in several buildings, including the Huntingdon Valley Post Office, the Artis Senior facility, and Gloria Dei Tower.

In addition to HVFC and our mutual aid fire companies, the Lower Moreland and Montgomery County Emergency Management staff were dispatched due to the scope of the incident.

Due to the extent of the electrical problem, residents were transferred out of the Artis facility, and emergency generators were set up at Gloria Dei Tower while PECO made repairs.

The incident lasted 12 hours, fire officials said.

The following were on scene: Fire stations 8, 9, 11, 99, LM and Montco Emergency Management, LMPD. Medic units from Bryn Athyn and Second Alarmers. LM, Cheltenham, and Abington Fire Marshals. Canteen from North Penn. HVFC and BAFC Fire Police.
