Working for Peace in South Sudan: Faith in Action in One of the World's Most Troubled Lands

Rev. James Ninrew Wednesday, September 24 7:30 - 8:45 p.m. Grace Presbyterian Church

In January 2000 helicopter gunships appeared over James Ninrew’s village in Sudan.  Sent by the Sudanese government, they bombed the houses, then landed and disgorged soldiers who began to shoot villagers.  At issue were massive oil reserves lying beneath the region, lucrative resources the government was determined to control.  Ultimately two hundred thousand people were forced from their homes, thousands were killed, and looting, rape, and torture were common.

All this occurred in the midst of a larger conflict between the northern part of Sudan, predominantly Muslim, and the largely Christian south, which led eventually to the creation of an independent Republic of South Sudan in 2011.  Unfortunately, South Sudan continues to feel the poverty brought on by decades of war, and deadly tribal violence has erupted.

Through these years James Ninrew, a Presbyterian pastor, has been an influential advocate for peace and justice.  He currently serves as Executive Director of the Assistance Mission for Africa.  He is also on the board of directors of the South Sudanese Network for Democracy and Elections, the South Sudan Action Network on Small Arms, and the Nuer Peace Council.

We are blessed to have the opportunity to hear Rev. Ninrew speak about his country and his work and give us insight into what it has meant to represent Jesus as a voice for peace.  Rev. Ninrew’s visit to our area is sponsored by the peacemaking program of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
