5 Die In Crashes, 300+ Arrested For DUI Over New Year's Weekend: PSP

While this New Year's weekend saw fewer crashes and fewer DUI arrests, it had a marked increase in fatal crashes, state police data shows.

PENNSYLVANIA — Pennsylvania State Police had a busy New Year's Eve weekend, making hundreds of DUI arrests, responding to numerous crashes — some fatal — and issuing many citations.

Over the three-day holiday weekend from Saturday to Monday, police said five people died in five crashes. One of those crashes was alcohol related.

The fatal crashes occurred in Pittsburgh, Milton, Selinsgrove, Fern Ridge, and Choconut Township, state police told Patch.

Last year, police reported no fatal crashes over the holiday weekend.

In total, police said the weekend saw 47 alcohol related crashes. That figure is down from the previous year, which had 51 alcohol related crashes.

There were 336 total crashes this year, down from 481 last year. Troop K — which covers Philadelphia, Delaware, and Montgomery counties — had the most crashes with 50.

Sixty-eight people were hurt in this year's crashes.

As for DUI arrests, state police made 326 this holiday weekend, compared to 356 from last year. Troop H — which covers Franklin, Adams, Perry, Dauphin, and Cumberland counties — saw the most DUIs with 35.

Other citation figures from this year's weekend are 3,833 for speeding, 56 for child seats, 344 for seat belts, and 8,125 other citations.
