An "unsettled" weather pattern will linger over the Philadelphia region in the wake of Wednesday's storms, leading to a chance of showers for the next several days and through Memorial Day weekend.
Temperatures will drop down to 53 Thursday night and the lows will remain in the low 50s for the next several days, marking a 40 to 45 degree turnaround from the scorching, record heat on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"The seemingly endless temperature roller coaster this spring will continue through the holiday weekend with another sharp cooldown across the northeastern quarter of the nation," Accuweather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said.
Rain showers are possible early Friday, but rain will become likely by Friday night, growing to a 90 percent chance by Saturday and 100 by Saturday night, the National Weather Service said.
Thunderstorms could hit Saturday night.
Sunday has a lower chance of rain, but showers remain a part of the forecast through Memorial Day, with rain possible after 8 a.m. That could impact parades, barbecues, and other events honoring those who died serving in the armed forces.
The high will only reach 59 on Saturday, but will be back up to 69 on Sunday and 76 on Monday, forecasters said.
While the temperature swings will leave many area residents feeling dazed, officials say the dips and spikes are very bad for plant life, too.
"This persistent pattern of major temperature swings has clearly wreaked havoc on plants and agriculture across the Northeast, as the region has gone from record-breaking heat to hard freezes, then back to leaf-withering heat and now another chilly stretch," Accuweather's Anderson added.
