It Could Feel Like 106 This Week In Philly Area As Extreme Heat Returns

Potentially life-threatening heat is returning to the region.

Heat watches and advisories will be in place this week southeastern Pennsylvania experiences dangerous heat, according to the latest forecast. (National Weather Service)

Another brutal heat wave is targeting the greater Philadelphia region this week, with heat index values soaring up to 106 degrees in some areas.

The brief but extreme burst of scorching weather will arrive Tuesday and continue at least through Friday.

"The heat peaks on Wednesday over the area as temperatures should get well into the 90s with increasing humidity," the National Weather Service said.

The front moving in from the Midwest where it already has set records.

Dense areas most impacted by the urban heat island effect, including Philadelphia and parts of Montgomery and Delaware counties, will be under an extreme heat watch all day Wednesday. The watch indicates life-threatening conditions are possible with 72 hours.

A heat advisory, meanwhile, is in place for the rest of the region from Tuesday afternoon and into Wednesday evening.

"Heat related illnesses increase significantly during
extreme heat and high humidity events," the National Weather Service added.

Highs are not forecasted to drop out of the 90s until Sunday.

"A dry cold front looks to pass sometime late Wednesday which will knock down temperatures a bit, but medium range guidance and ensembles indicate above normal temperatures in the upper-80s/low-90s could remain through the end of the week and potentially into the weekend," the National Weather Service said.

By late week and into the weekend, there is another possibility of showers and thunderstorms, with some being severe, forecasters said.

However, as it is several days out, it is too early to know the details and potential impacts.

Thursday
Mostly sunny, with a high near 96.

Mostly clear, with a low around 74.

Friday
Sunny, with a high near 94.

Friday Night
Partly cloudy, with a low around 73.

Saturday
A chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 93. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.
