Flooding Threat Persists In Philly Region After Heavy Storms

Thunderstorms could bring localized amounts of up to 3 to 5 inches of rain per hour, forecasters said.

| Updated

The threat of flooding continues throughout the Philadelphia region Monday as heavy storms dropped several inches of rainfall.

A flood watch remains in place until 11 p.m. Monday night as officials warn of the impacts of growing accumulation.

"Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations," the National Weather Service said. "Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas."

Multiple rounds of showers are expected throughout the day, with thunderstorms possible after 2 p.m.

In the heart of thunderstorms, rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour are predicted, with localized amounts of 3 to 5 inches possible. That much rain would cause widespread flash flooding.

Numerous communities around the Philadelphia suburbs have already received two to three inches of rain, according to the latest totals from the National Weather Service.

Philadelphia has accumulated 1.4 inches, while Plymouth Township has 2.6 inches, Sadsburyville has 3.1 inches, Langhorne has 3.1 inches, and Yardley has 3.3 inches.

Precipitation will fade later in the evening, and Tuesday is expected to be clear, according to forecasters.

Storms could return on Wednesday, with showers likely and more rounds of thunderstorms threatening.

Authorities reminded drivers to always turn around if they encounter standing water.
