The remnants of Hurricane Isaias continue to move toward the Philadelphia region as forecasters provided an updated forecast picture for the coming weekend.
The storm, the longest its taken for a hurricane to develop in the Atlantic in the fall season in a 121 years, is making landfall on the Gulf Coast Friday night. Impacts in the Philadelphia area are expected by Sunday.
Rain is likely to continue throughout the day Sunday and Sunday night and into Monday, with three quarters of an inch expected during the day and another half inch in the evening, forecasters said.
Higher amounts could fall where thunderstorms hit directly, bringing up to 1-2 inches in some places. The entire region has a "marginal risk" or receiving those higher amounts of rainfall, which could trigger flash flooding.
"The storm is forecast to turn eastward and cut across the Appalachians and then off the mid-Atlantic coast by early next week," Accuweather said. "By then, as a tropical rainstorm, drenching downpours can lead to localized flash flooding, especially in steep terrain and in areas where the ground is saturated."
The National Weather Service has placed the area just south of the region in a level one "marginal risk" for severe impacts. The most severe impacts will likely fall just short of the city and the immediate suburbs.
Dangerously high wind gusts and even tornadoes will threaten the southern states as the storm moves inland, and some high winds could still linger by the time the storm reaches the mid-Atlantic. Those impacts are not expected to be severe in the Philly area.
