'Life-Threatening' Allergy Risk Gets Ice Cream Pulled From PA Stores

There have been no illnesses reported yet, but customers may return the ice cream for a full refund.

PENNSYLVANIA — Weis Markets issued a recall on one of its ice cream products, which may have been distributed to Pennsylvania stores. The product may contain undeclared allergens that can cause life-threatening reactions, according to the company.

The grocer recalled 108 containers Weis Quality Sea Salt Caramel Ripple Ice Cream (48 ounces). The product may have been distributed in 197 Weis Markets stores, including its Pennsylvania locations.

The ice cream may contain undeclared soy and coconut allergens, which can cause serious reactions. There have been no illnesses reported to date, according to the recall notice. But customers who purchased the product can return it for a full refund.

The container says Weis Quality Sea Salt Caramel Ripple Ice Cream and the lid says Weis Quality Caramel Caribou Ice Cream. The container shows a UPC of 041497-01288 and a sell-by date of Nov. 8, 2023. The sell-by date is on the bottom of the packaging.

The product was produced Nov. 8.

Weis Markets initiated the recall after realizing it distributed the product in packaging that doesn't reveal the presence of soy and coconut. A temporary breakdown in the company's production and packaging process caused the issue, according to subsequent investigation.
